Poll: New Orleans Is No. 1 Vacation Spot For Families
A new online poll names New Orleans as the No. 1 family vacation spot in the country. Yahoo Travel and National Geographic (news - web sites) Traveler magazine conducted the poll. The New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. launched its first family marketing campaign in the summer of 2001. Families now make up almost 16 percent of the city's tourists.
Last year, 10 million people visited New Orleans.
while i have a real deep affection for the big easy, i find this hilarious.
not the bit about #1, the city has a lot of top honors, usually in the negative categories. like dirtiest, most murders, corruption, unemployed, depraved, fattest . . .
but #1 family spot? too funny . . . or maybe not. one thing the easy will never be is a disneyworld or vegas, both of which fight very hard for the family dollar. neither has no soul, and it is sprawling out of control. new orleans can't really sprawl. it is surrounded on all three sides by water, lots of it. and tho things have changed a lot in the rest of the country, new orleans will always be a world to itself. quite unique among other large cities is the trend to hang onto the past. somehow it is still quaint and there are a lot more things to do than stumble up and down 'bourbon street'.

When I tell people that I love the French Quarter even more during the day than I do at night, they think I'm just trying to cover up my more demented side. That is, until they take a trip with me. It is such a beautiful city. We've also taken kids with us and they love it, too. Just try not to go in the middle of summer. It's a little stinky. :)
i used to love working in the quarter early in the day. you see all the french bread loaves by the doors, all the guys hosing down the walks and it just has this wonderful feel to it.
i think alot of the reason families are now going to the easy is because of the partying kids telling the parents about all the other wonderful things the city has to offer.

Oh, your description of a French Quarter morning is killing me! I like to stay at the Inn on Bourbon with a little balcony and sit and drink my coffee and watch all the people in the calm, beautiful morning getting ready for the chaos of the evening. Early morning in The Quarter is, for me, a spiritual experience.
i only wish i was there this morning.. . it was a lovely 81 warm degrees . . . here, we didn't get above 50! i can't wait to get back to warmth! and ben-yays and cafe-ole!

Never been to "the easy." it sounds like a fun town. what part of year do you suggest? I party, but I'm not a partier, so the spectacle of mardi gras intrigues me, but it may be a bit much. and i know it's sticky hot in the summer, so that's definitely out. when is jazz fest?

the jazz fest is the last weekend of april and the first weekend of may, (altho if they keep adding days to the schedule it'll just be like mardi gras without the mess). that is an ideal time to visit, not hot yet and not real wet.
the city has a slew of great music clubs with everything from jazz to blues to rock. and some very cool bars that aren't in the quarter.
hell nostra, when we move back you can come stay at the wreck house and we'll paint the town. but i get to pick the color.
