well, as you can see nine inch nails is coming to reno. we won't be there tho, it was a toss between the nails or u2 in san jose on april 9, with the 'kings of leon' opening. and u2 just won out for a number of reasons, one of which is, well, they are U2! i worked with nin while setting up trent's studio in new orleans, ran monitors for a few 'nothing' shows, so i've kinda been-there-done-that.
but i am looking forward to the new nin cd 'with teeth'. it has a release date of may 3rd, but i found a bootleg copy of the 1st single 'the hand that feeds'. not bad, it is classic nin, and not as ingrating as 'perfect drug'.
it's been almost 6 years since 'the fragile' was released, and so much has changed in the music world. it'll be interesting to see if nin can grab back some rock momentum from the masses that have been amerikan idled.

i was stage manager for the record release show for nothing records in '95. 'manson', 'pop will eat itself' and 'prong' were like trent's stable.manson was the most discusting thing i have witnessed on stage, (and this comes from someone who has lived in new orleans most of his life, saw the pistols in 78 and just about every kind of rock debachery there is).
it was oh-too-disturbing. i found my self laffing hysterically how all these tattooed, overly pierced kids just fawned over the mutated clown, letting him drip spit in their mouths. . .ARRRGGHH!
and now his best bit is in a michael moore movie.
i still respect trent tho. he did start a new band, but i wanna trash my own place and not share it with hollow punks . . . i'll enjoy in the wreckroom . . .

I love U2. Not only that, but I bought a Kings of Leon CD months ago. Are you impressed? I'd love to see them live. You'll have to post a review.
I saw U2 in '83 when I was still at school, in a venue that held 3000 people or so. (Just after the release of the War album). This was at a time that they were criticising mega band excesses. They emphasised simple lighting and effects.
Looks like they changed their minds!
I saw a NIN clip a few weeks ago and Rezner is banging around the set smashing into stuff and the production assistants are rushing on the film set putting things right. All the time filming. Anyone seen that clip? And what is it?
the clip you mention, i belive, is 'march of the pigs', from 'downward spiral'. one on the best rock viddys, kinda like blur's 'song2'. . . total chaos. i have always loved the rawness of stuff like that, whether it's sun-era elvis, hamburg beatles, or good garage rock. that nin vid is the one of the best.

Another one I wanna get is the Alphex Twin "Come to Daddy" clip, really scary. I've only seen it once (years ago), but it still sticks.
And speaking of "raw" performances, theres another clip I saw late at night many moons ago, it may have been Black Flag. The skinny lead singer/guitarist is bleeding all over his white(?) Fender(?) from his hand. That was another one that stood out.
the clip is on the 'closer' video, it has all the gruesome stuff and a live show from around 1995. it is only out on vhs, (the scum bags!), but it can be found on ebay, or amazon, for an inflated price.
as for the 'black flag', i think that was from the film 'the decline of western civilization', about the early '80s l.a. punk scene . . .

oh yeah, i'll look up the aphex twins on winmx. that is where i find the hard-to-find shit like christopher walken in the fatboy slim viddy, chemical bros 'let forever be', or all the really hard to find beatle stuff.

The CD is good and I like to listen to a musician's music before I see them for the first time. I think it's worth the $15 but I haven't listened to it in a while so I might be totally wrong about that. I almost bought Ken Burn's Jazz the other day. It was on sale at Best Buy but I gave up shopping for Lent. Maybe that will be my Easter gift to myself for being such a good girl.
I saw U2 in a small venue in 1980, when the "War" album had been recently released. Whew, what a show. Everything was stripped-down, primitive, very electric. Bono body-surfed through the crowd, stage effects were minimal, and they sounded GREAT!
I still think they are a great band. However, when Bono was calling "Atomic Bomb" the band's "first rock and roll album" with Steve Lillywhite producing, I expected something more stripped-down and primal. I suppose youthful exuberance isn't something that a band can put on record forever...
On the other hand, I have a music DVD of U2 live in Boston that really kicks butt. Despite their now being "stadium rockers" I still think they are a vital part of world musical consciousness.
If I want to hear the old stuff, I can get out their albums from "Boy" up through "The Unforgettable Fire" and be thoroughly satisfied. And going to one of their shows? Knowing they would play some of that old stuff would be enough to help me choose them hands-down over NIN.

i caught u2 in '80 also! at a small club called 'ol man river's' in the easy. that was the best u2 show i've seen.very intimate setting and the band was so raw and tight.
i just got some pics from a friend of the sex pistols in baton rouge jan, 8 78 . . i may post becuz they are so cool . . . wish i could post the bootleg of the show too!
i really liked 'broken' and 'fixed', altho sprail holdsa special place in my heart coz i was in a really shitty marriage that was bad in the worse sense. it all made a dent in me and spiral was the only thing i held onto . . .
the folgers bit is good maybe do a mock of the viddy. some guy sitting and the table sipping coffee, then the song comes blaring in. cut to the living room where nin is doin the song!
call the ad agency!
